Any punters looking for big value with a big chance at this year's Aintree Grand National could do a lot worse than to take a close look at Arbor Supreme.

The Willie Mullins-trained, J. P. McManus-owned, nine year old looks to have most – if not quite all – the credentials required of a National winner.

Firstly, he's exactly the right age, and he's most definitely carrying an ideal weight (10-03), which seems relatively low for a horse with such a legitimate claim and it could be worth placing a Grand National free bet on him.

Arbor Supreme is currently around 20-1 for Saturday's race but looks set to start at a shorter price. Last year, he was clearly traveling well when very well fancied to win the race, but landed awkwardly at The Chair, causing his unlucky rider Paul Townend to be catapulted out of the saddle. This year, David Casey will partner the horse.

His most recent run was an extremely encouraging second to current Grand National favourite The Midnight Club at Fairyhouse on 23rd February in the BobbyJo Chase over 3 miles 1 furlong, with other National fancies Oscar Time and Vic Venturi in third and fourth respectively.

Counting against him is his disappointing showing in the Welsh National when he was pulled up - but he bounced back to form when taking second to favourite The Midnight Club very close at Fairyhouse.

There is no question that Arbor Supreme has the ability to win Saturday's National if he hits peak form. His inconsistency, though, is a worrying factor as is his liking for softer going – though Mullins reckons the horse jumps better on good ground, and unlike some contenders, it doesn't look like he doesn't go at all when the ground is relatively firm as he has won on good going.

Meanwhile, his stamina is beyond question and given better luck in running, he could run a big race from a low weight in the race for which he has been exclusively laid out; the Grand National.
