Some stark differences of opinion have emerged in recent days amongst the bookmaking fraternity as to
who will start favourite for the eagerly anticipated clash between the outstanding older miler Canford
Cliffs and the unbeaten three-year-old miler Frankel in the Group 1 Qipco Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood
on July 27, writes Elliot Slater.

Since the victories of Canford Cliffs in the Queen Anne stakes and Frankel in the St James's Palace Stakes
at Royal Ascot last month, nearly all firms had made the Richard Hannon trained Canford Cliffs a marginal
favourite to beat Frankel, the four-year-old having completed a five-timer of Group 1 successes in defeating
the mighty Goldikova in one of the best races in recent years.
Frankel was rather less impressive in beating Zoffany by three quarters of a length, although most observers
believe he would have won with rather more in hand had Tom Queally not had a rush of blood at the three
furlong pole when he asked his mount to sprint for home before the final bend. Those planning to
bet on Glorious Goodwood shouldn't expect him to race the same way next time out.
There now appears some momentum behind Sir Henry Cecil's Frankel who has been made an odds-on chance (4/5)
by one bookmaker, who seems to have laid down a marker that they think he will win. Consequently they have
pushed out Canford Cliffs to a best price 11/8. A number of firms have duly priced the pair up as 11/10
joint-favourites, but some still make Canford Cliffs their market leader at evens. Another has pushed
Frankel out to 6/5. At the time of writing, Frankel has been made
favourite on Betfair at 2.14, whilst
Canford Cliffs is available to back at 2.24. Those following the
Betfair horseracing tips may want to take note.
Racing is all about opinion, and it seems that more than any other recent top class event the Sussex Stakes
is dividing opinion straight down the middle of the racing fraternity. |
