When asked what the handicap performance of the meeting was at Royal Ascot 2011, the answer from analysts and handicappers alike has been almost unanimous as they have chorused the name Brown Panther. Tom Dascombe's Shirocco colt dismantled the King George V Handicap field off a mark of 91 and it's doubtful he will be seen in handicaps again.

Previous to his Ascot run he had hinted that he would be up to getting competitive in a race such as this but none of his form had given any inclination that he was capable of winning by 6 lengths in one of the most hotly contested horse racing handicaps of the year. He started life on the Southwell fibresand track in a late season two year-old maiden, winning by a length. That outing augured well and he was well fancied for his handicap debut earlier this year Kempton, but he looked slightly weak on that occasion and as though he would come on for the outing.
Well, he has certainly done that. Switched to the turf he won his next two races at Chester and Haydock in the style of a rapidly improving horse off marks of 73 and 81. Raised 10lbs for that impressive Haydock win where he was ridden with more restraint that at Chester, he arrived at Ascot with plenty of winning credentials but so did plenty of the rest of the field.

Richard Kingscote who has partnered Brown Panther in all of his races rode him in similar style to his victory at Haydock, tracking a strong pace and kicking for the line from the home turn. Many thought that the manoeuvre came too early but Brown Panther showed admirable stamina and cleared away from the field to win by six lengths, and not often do you see that sort of winning distance recorded in a handicap at the Royal Meeting. Anyone following the online horse racing betting should keep an eye on him.

Originally his stables only Derby entry he is clearly a smart horse and connections even toyed with supplementing him for the Irish Derby, that plan has now been shelved due to its proximity to the Ascot race. But a Derby is still on the agenda with Brown Panther heading to Germany next for their version of the race, after that the likely targets are to include the St Leger via the Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

He looks happy on most sorts of going but is ideally suited by some cut in the ground as he found at Ascot. Brown Panther may have missed out on one Classic at Epsom but it's not hard to see him landing another at Doncaster come September.
