On the face of it the Michael Dods-trained Rain Delayed appears a shade out of his depth in taking on some of the world's top sprinters in the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, but connections are very hopeful that their charge will perform with credit and are looking forward to a very special day out, writes Elliot Slater.

Trained until August of last year by Ger Lyons in Ireland, Rain Delayed proved a decent sprinter during the 2009 season rising through the ranks of sprint handicappers ending the term having finished second in Listed company as well as also hitting the frame in a hot York handicap. Last season the Oasis Dream gelding made the best possible start when landing the Listed Cork Stakes then running with credit in group company before being sold to Andrew Tinkler, who sent him immediately to Michael Dods' north-east yard. The Ascot 2011 betting makes him something of an outsider, but he seems to have something about him.

Dods campaigned the five-year-old in Meydan during the winter where it's fair to say that he cut little ice and appeared ill at ease on the Tapeta surface, but he seemed none the worse for his travels to the Gulf when finishing second in a good Newbury handicap in mid-April before steeping up to finish just a half-length runner-up to the speedy Tangerine Trees in the Group 3 Palace House Stakes back at HQ a couple of weeks later. Those who bet on Royal Ascot would have taken note of the performance.

Although he never got into the contest when soundly beaten by Delegator in the Group 2 Duke of York Stakes in May, Dods reports his charge to be in fine shape and believes he is worth chancing at the highest level and could run significantly better than his odds of up to 40/1 might suggest. Stranger things have happened in the unpredictable world of horse racing.
