Ever since the renovations to the track and stands at Ascot it has paid to take a close look at the jockeys that ride well there. The racing at the Berkshire track tends to be ultra-competitive with large fields so jockeys' strike rates tend to be on the low side.

In fact many of the leading jockeys have surprisingly low strike rates at Ascot and they are considerably lower than they are elsewhere and a strike rate above 15% at Ascot is a figure to be much admired in the weighing-room. To prove that point Frankie Dettori, thought of by many punters as the "King Of Ascot" has in recent years only had a strike rate 10% and backing all of his mounts would have produced a loss of £95.40. He's not alone in that statistic either as several of the other leading jockeys like Ryan Moore, Kieran Fallon and William Buick all have low strike rates at Ascot.

So who are the men to follow at the Ascot track, well top of the strike rates for those amongst the leading jockeys is Johnny Murtagh who has since the track re-opened partnered 23 winners from 126 rides for a near 19% strike-rate. That in itself is impressive enough but at the same time he has also returned a massive level stake profit of £64.76, and that is an exceptional return. He was just touched off by Ryan Moore for the top jockeys' title last year and on the figures there are not many more effective than Murtagh at the track. He'll be without the Ballydoyle battalions this year but he is still a notable jockey booking and sure to be in demand. Those following the horse race betting odds should keep an eye out for his name.

Richard Hills is a much maligned jockey in some quarters but his Ascot record cannot be taken too lightly and over the past five years since the track re-opened only Ryan Moore with 32 winners has ridden more than Hills who has 30 at a strike rate of nearly 16%. Jamie Spencer who, like Hills, can on occasion infuriate punters also has an excellent Ascot record with 27 winners at a strike rate of 14%. He may be worth a horseracing bet depending on other factors.

There are some other notable figures recorded by jockeys outside what would be considered the normal top level bracket at Ascot and a couple worth following may well be Steve Drowne whose 10 winners at Ascot have produced a very healthy profit of £99.50 and Tom Queally. Queally who will have the support of the strong Cecil yard is another who is starting to ride Ascot well and his 83 rides so far at the course have returned nine winners and a level stakes profit of £46.80.

Jockeyship will play a huge part at the Royal Meeting and Murtagh, Hills and Spencer all look capable of improving their excellent records at the Berkshire track.
