By the age of 13 most thoroughbred racehorses are well into their retirement with their racing days nothing but a dim and distant memory, but the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Hello Bud remains as enthusiastic as ever about his trade and seems (like a vintage wine) to be getting better with age, writes Elliot Slater.

Twelve months ago Hello Bud gave young Sam Twiston-Davies the thrill of a lifetime when leading the John Smith's Grand National field from the first fence all the way to the second from home, after which he kept on bravely to finish a commendable fifth of the 40 runners behind Don't Push It.

Returning to Aintree for his seasonal debut in November the veteran once again showed how much he relished the challenge of the daunting obstacles and the flat, galloping track, when running away from much younger rivals to win the Listed Becher Chase by a length-and-a-quarter from Royal Rosa. Not seen again until Warwick's Grade 3 Classic Chase in January the Jurado gelding unsurprisingly found the heavy ground all against him and was wisely pulled up before 3 out having floundered on ground that has never suited him.

With the advancing years it seems that Hello Bud needs time between his races so he should be at a disadvantage in arriving at Aintree on April 9 after an absence of three months from the track and the latest Grand National odds reflect this.

Indeed, Twiston-Davies' grand sort seems to perk up immeasurably when the sun is on his back as he proved at Ayr two years ago when gamely landing the Scottish Grand National from Gone To Lunch.

Generally available at odds of 33/1 (although some firms go as short as just 20s), Hello Bud is bidding to give his popular handler his third win in the John Smith's Grand National following the successes of Earth Summit (1998) and Bindaree (2002).
