Thursday's Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival contained a handful
of horses hoping to make the cut for the John Smith's Grand National at Aintree on April 9 and they enjoyed
mixed fortunes in the three-and-a-quarter-mile contest, writes Elliot Slater.

Junior, the hugely impressive winner and the runner-up Faasel, are both trained by David Pipe, and whilst
the winner will struggle to make the cut even though has been cut to as short as 14/1 in the
Aintree Grand National
betting, Faasel might just sneak in off 10st 1lb and could belie his current three-figure odds.
The fifth horse home was the Irish mare Pomme Tiepy, ridden by Katie Walsh and trained by Willie Mullins,
who raced in blinkers for the first time and put up a good performance to stay on past beaten horses and
suggest she has the necessary stamina for Aintree. Unfortunately, her chances of making the race are even
slimmer than Junior's as she has been allotted a weight of just 9st 9lbs and is unlikely to make the cut and
anyone looking for Grand
National tips should remember this.
Jonjo O'Neill's Can't Buy Time has fallen in the last two renewals of the Grand National and did little to
enhance his prospects this time around with a sluggish display, eventually pulling up before two out. He
should definitely make the cut having been handed a weight of 10st 4lbs but it is hard to enthuse over his
chances in current form.
One of the biggest disappointments of the race was Galant Nuit, (third in the race last year behind
Ballabriggs), who hails from the in-form Middleham yard of Ferdy Murphy. He was sent off a 15/2 second
favourite but never went a yard and was tailed off when pulling up before the fourth last. He surely is
better than this effort, but again his long handicap mark of just 9st 12lbs for the Aintree marathon means
he is highly unlikely to make the starting line-up.
