"He might not be quite the force of old, but if permit holder Barry Potts can
reignite the racing passion in the formerly high-class Notre Pere he could well prove to be the blot on the
handicap in this Saturday's feature John Smith's Grand National at Aintree", writes Elliot Slater
|
The 2008 Welsh Grand National winner joined Potts recently having been with Jim Dreaper throughout his
career during which he was considered a serious contender for top honours in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Third
in the 2008 Irish Grand National and a 13-length winner of the Grade 1 2009 Punchestown Guinness Gold Cup
(after which he was raised to a mark of 167), Notre Pere's form began to slide following a fall on his
seasonal debut at Down Royal later that year in the in the Grade1 JNWinne.com Chase, a race for which he had
been made evens favourite.
That tumble appeared to knock the horse sideways as he looked a shadow of his former self on his following
start at Haydock when strongly fancied by many to beat the reigning Gold Cup winner Kauto Star. In the end
he ran no sort of race and finished fifth, beaten 50-lengths and those thinking about putting
Grand
National bets on him would have been put off.
In his subsequent outings Notre Pere has shown that he still retains plenty of ability, including when
having his first taste of the
Grand National fences in finishing fifth to Hello Bud (after being hampered) in November's Becher Chase,
and it could prove to be that a change of scene will spark renewed interest in the old horse who is set to
race off a mark some 20lbs lower than when in his pomp. Soft ground would help the cause of Potts' new
acquisition, and should the rains come then the 33/1 on offer at present could look something of a gift. |
