The last of the 7/4 available about Investec Derby favourite Carlton House has long gone, and as the public gamble on The Queen's colt continues 13/8 is the very best price in the market place and is drying up by the day. The royal runner could eventually go off one of the shortest priced favourites for years, mainly due to popular support, writes Elliot Slater.

With little more than a week and a half to go to the big race itself it seems unlikely that any new and outstanding contenders will emerge to shake up the Derby betting market, so punters are rushing to back the Sir Michael Stoute-trained winner of the Dante Stakes, clearly taking the opinion that his winning effort was the best of the various Derby trials run in Britain and Ireland.

Bookmakers have reported a flood of bets for Carlton House in recent days and the prospect of the horse going off close to even money on the day of the race is by no means out of the question. Knowing that the The Queen has been endeavouring to win the world's greatest Flat race for more than 60 years, and that the closest she came was with Aureole, who ran a gallant second to Pinza in the 1953 Derby, there is doubtless a great deal of sentiment behind the money for the Street Cry colt, but his form does stack up and his defeat of Seville in the Dante looks as strong a trial as anything seen this season.

Positive statements from Stoute and big race jockey Ryan Moore have further fuelled the excitement surrounding the royal runner, who will bid to give his beknighted trainer a sixth Derby winner, 30 years after his first success with the outstanding, but ill-fated Shergar in 1981.
