At the start of the 2010/11 National Hunt season the Robert Waley-Cohen owned Long Run was considered by
many as a potential Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, but there could be no hiding the reservations felt by a
significant number of so-called racing pundits that the horse's regular rider, owner's son Sam Waley-Cohen,
might not be quite up to the job of getting the best out of his precocious mount, writes Elliot Slater.

As subsequent events have proved, Sam Waley-Cohen might be an amateur rider who spends most of his time
managing his chain of dental practices in and around London, but he is undoubtedly a very talented horseman.
His victory on Long Run in the King George VI Chase was followed by an exemplary ride on the six-year-old to
beat Kauto Star and Denman in a pulsating Cheltenham Gold Cup last month, and any doubts that a tiny
minority might have had about the 28-year-old's riding abilities were surely dispelled after he gave another
demonstration of how to ride Aintree on board his father's Oscar Time, trained in Ireland by Martin Lynch,
who ran a gallant second to Ballabriggs in the John Smith's Grand National on Saturday. Anyone who placed a
horse racing bet on Oscar Time
certainly got good value for money.
The plan had been to stalk the pace setters and then produce his mount with an effort approaching The Elbow,
half way up the famously long Aintree run-in. Waley-Cohen followed the plan to the letter, placing his mount
spot on at every fence and then pulling out at The Elbow to get within half a length of the
Donald
McCain-trained Ballabriggs. The fact Jason Maguire's mount found that little bit extra in the last 100
yards to run out a superb winner, doesn't detract in any way from the ride given the runner-up, or the
commendable effort from Oscar Time himself. |
